KChR’s MIA requests teachers’ and pupils’ dress code data

The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR) has demanded from heads of city and district administrations to provide information about the teachers and students who attend schools wearing clothes with religious attributes.

The request states that “employees of the republic MIA’s Centre for Combating Extremism (Centre “E”) are taking prophylactic measures to suppress any ideas of religious, nationalist or political hatred and enmity among young people.”

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the KChR’s Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM or Muftiate) had banned wearing niqabs "until the threats are eliminated and a new theological conclusion is made." Ismail Berdiev, the SAM’s presidium chairman, explained the ban by a resolution of the Muslims’ Coordination Centre of Northern Caucasus, which he also heads. The niqab problem is far-fetched for Russia, but its ban in Dagestan and the KChR will be followed by an attack on hijabs and other Islamic attributes, Islamic scholars are sure.
