Investigator links demand to extend journalist Kevorkova's arrest her profession and ties

Nadezhda Kevorkova, a journalist, can use her extensive ties among high-ranking officials and find artificial proofs of her innocence, the investigator has stated, demanding to extend her arrest. I his turn, Kaloi Akhilgov, Nadezhda's advocate, has objected that the investigation is essentially over; and it's impossible to influence it.

On May 7, the Basmanny Court of Moscow ruled to arrest Nadezhda Kevorkova, 65, accused of justifying terrorism. On August 2, the arrest was extended by two months.

A "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has talked to those who came to support Kevorkova. Sofia, an activist, admitted that she does not know Nadezhda personally, but often comes to "political trials." "It is always important for a person who has been unfairly accused to show that they are supported," she has stated.

The investigator has stated that Kevorkova is accused of committing serious crimes; therefore, the term of arrest should be extended, since no other preventive measure will do.

There is no evidence of Kevorkova's "influence," Kaloi Akhilgov has stated. "There is no reason to think that Kevorkova can hide from investigators. The inquiry is essentially over. Kevorkova's characteristics are only positive," he has added.

Let us remind you that Kevorkova is accused of justifying terrorism for reposting a text by journalist Orkhan Djemal in her Telegram channel about the attack on Nalchik and a publication about the Taliban movement*.

Djemal's text had not been recognized as illegal, the advocate has emphasized. The publications about the events in Nalchik in 2005 concerned the torture, to which detainees were subjected, and irritated law enforcers; while she "did not support terrorism in any form," Maxim Shevchenko, a journalist and Nadezhda's former husband, has stated.

*By the Russian Supreme Court the movement has been recognized to be a terrorist organization and banned in Russia.
