Zakhar Zaripov, convicted for appeal to Kadyrov, hospitalized

Zakhar Zaripov, who was convicted for appealing to the head of Chechnya, was hospitalized from the SIZO (pre-trial prison) with stage four cancer.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Zaripov was diagnosed with cancer, his advocate reported in August. In September, the convict's relatives said that the disease was progressing, but the SIZO staff failed to provide him with efficient medical treatment.

On April 1, 2024, the court sentenced Zakhar Zaripov, a resident of the Khabarovsk Territory, to five years in penal colony for his public appeal to Ramzan Kadyrov. A linguistic examination found signs of "incitement to an armed seizure of power with the aim of violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation" in Zaripov's appeal.

Since September 2023, Zaripov was complaining about a growing tumour. In a letter to his wife, he described his condition as follows: "I feel bad, it hurts, I can't eat, sleep, it's hard for me to breathe, I'm dying." The commission of the FSIN (Russian Federal Penitentiary Service) acknowledged that the man's illness does not allow him to be kept at the SIZO, the Telegram channel of the human rights project "OVD-Info"* has informed.

Another human rights project, "Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial", recognized Zaripov as a political prisoner, stating that his post with the appeal posed no public danger and was a rhetorical reproach to Kadyrov for sending his fellow countrymen to participate in the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine.
