Nikita Zhuravel sentenced to 13.5 years in jail for burning Koran down
A court in Volgograd has sentenced Nikita Zhuravel to a long colony term, finding him guilty of treason.
The voluntary nature of Zhuravel's testimonies about treason remains questionable, but the closed trial regime does not allow listening to his statements, human rights defenders have noted.
The court sentenced Zhuravel to 13.5 years in a penal colony. With account of the unserved term in another case against him (of burning the Koran down), he will spend 14 years more in a maximum security penal colony, the "V1.ru" outlet reports.
Let us remind you that on February 27, 2024, a court in Grozny sentenced Zhuravel to 3.5 years in a penal colony, finding him guilty of violating the right to religion and of hooliganism. On October 3, the Russian General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) announced the initiation of a new case against Zhuravel – for treason. According to investigators, he had offered cooperation to an agent of the Ukrainian security service and sent him a video of a train carrying Russian military equipment.
