Victims are unhappy with verdict to policeman Islam Atavov for detainee's death

The verdict for Islam Atavov, a Makhachkala policeman, for his involvement in the death of Kurban Dalgatov will be appealed against by the victims' advocate.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the suffered party asked to cancel Atavov's pre-trial agreement due to the fact that, in their opinion, he gave contradictory testimonies trying to avoid a more severe punishment. On December 9, the court sentenced Atavov to 7.5 years in a penal colony.

Madina Alieva, an advocate, has announced her plans to challenge the ruling to send another defendant, Marat Babaev, to the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine.

Raisa Dalgatova, Kurban's mother, has stated that during the entire investigation and trials, none of those accused of killing her son tried to apologize, admit his guilt, or try to compensate for his death.

Atavov's testimonies are not essential for convicting other involved policemen, said Shamil Khadulaev, the Chairman of the Dagestan Public Oversight Commission (POC). "He had changed his testimonies so many times that he in fact completely broke his pre-trial agreement and said nothing new," Mr Khadulaev has noted.
