Analysts assess prospects for investigation into torture of Magomedov

The attention of the Dagestani authorities to a complaint filed by Magomed Magomedov, a native of the republic, about torture by law enforcers in the Moscow Region could affect the investigation, analysts believe.

In the Moscow Region, a court arrested Magomed Magomedov. The man is suspected of illegally manufacturing and storing firearms. Public prosecutors claim that Magomed Magomedov is a relative of supporters of the “Islamic State” (IS, a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, – note of the “Caucasian Knot”), who are wanted and live in Syria. At trial, law enforcers did not provide any arguments in favour of the version about the Magomed Magomedov’s connections with a terrorist organization.

The reason for the man’s detention was the suspicion that Magomed Magomedov converted a traumatic pistol into a combat one, since he collects and sells firearms that are deprived of the ability to fire. The man claimed that after his detention, three law enforcers were torturing him using a stun gun and a mop.

In the Magomed Magomedov’s case, the public outcry to some extent affected the investigation into the torture, political analyst Albert Esedov suggests.

Earlier, Magomed Magomedov had claimed that the law enforcers put a rubber glove on a mop and inserted it into his anus. The Moscow Region Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) stated that the investigation did not confirm the information about illegal actions “against the sexual inviolability” of the detainee and that the investigation is ongoing regarding the detainee’s complaint about the use of a stun gun against him.

Shamil Khadulaev, the chairman of the Public Oversight Commission (POC) of Dagestan, reported that the public outcry in connection with the statement voiced by the leader of Dagestan could help the investigators to understand the situation in more detail.
