CEC of South Ossetia waits for candidates for parliament to be active
So far, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of South Ossetia has not received a single application for participation in elections to the regional parliament of the fifth convocation appointed on May 31. The deadline for submitting applications from candidates expires in 10 days.
"The elections will be held on party lists," Bella Plieva, head of the CEC of South Ossetia, said to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. "According to the information that we've received from the Ministry of Justice, four parties have been admitted to take part in these elections - the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), 'Unity' and 'People's Will' Parties and the Socialist 'Homeland' Party. The deadline for lodging applications is April 14." According to Ms Plieva, increased activity of the parties is expected next week.
Party candidates will fight for 34 deputy mandates. They parties should overcome the 7-percent barrier. The deputies of the new convocation will work on the professional basis.
The parliaments of previous convocations had 30 deputies, and 4 seats were reserved for Georgian villages of South Ossetia, which, however, never appeared. At present, these seats will be given to deputies from Leningorsk District of South Ossetia.
