Ombudsman of Georgia: situation in Georgian prisons is catastrophic

On May 4, 2007, while presenting his report for the second half of 2006 to the Committee for Human Rights and Civil Integration, Ombudsman Sozar Subari, "National Defender of Georgia," has named the state of the Georgian penitentiary system to be catastrophic and beyond the critical mark.

According to the Ombudsman, even personal hygiene of inmates is a serious problem in prisons, since they have no access to shower for months even in new prisons. Sozar Subari gave an example of a prisoner whom doctors had refused to examine because of his awful hygienic condition. The inmate was allowed to take a shower only after intervention of the National Defender.
