Azerbaijani activist Gadjiev claims beating by police
Djamil Gadjiev, an activist, claims that he was beaten up after being detained by police in Baku. A doctor diagnosed him with bruises.
On January 10, Djamil Gadjiev, a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), was detained when he unfurled a poster in defence of political prisoners in front of the courthouse where a hearing was taking place on the case of the opposition politician, Tofig Yagublu.
Tofig Yagublu, a member of the NCDF's Coordination Centre and of the "Musavat" Party, was detained on December 14, 2023, on suspicion of fraud and document forgery. He asserts that his persecution was politically motivated.
Law enforcers released Gadjiev on January 10 after he was subjected to physical pressure for several hours.
"They kicked me on my arms, legs, and body. Then they handcuffed me from behind, with my head bent down, and in that state ... the beatings continued," the oppositionist has stated.
Then they took him to the chief of the police department. "He asked me why we, that is, oppositionists, didn't want a 'quiet life.' He said: 'Do you want to turn the country into Syria or Ukraine?' I answered him that my actions hadn't violated the law ... The boss finally said that they control everything that happens in the city; and any protest actions will be suppressed," Djamil Gadjiev has stated, adding that doctor diagnosed him with "muscle bruises."
