Two persons arrested on the suspicion of falsifying the election of Yerevan mayor

On June 1, Norair Eghiazarian, member of a polling district at constituency No 8, and Armen Oganian, elector of the same district, were arrested in Armenia under the criminal proceedings initiated upon facts of violations in the course of May 31 election to the Elders' Quorum.

Note that the final results of the election to the Elders' Quorum of Yerevan are going to be made public on June 7, however, the Armenian ruling Republican Party has won the majority of  46.6%, and Garik Beglarian, the incumbent mayor, member of the winning party and first in the list of the Quorum, automatically becomes mayor.

The detainees arrested on May 1 are suspected of falsifying the election results, reports Panorama.am referring to a source in the Armenian power authorities.

The criminal proceedings were initiated on the basis of media publications on May 31 - June 1, specifically on Internet sites "А1+", "Etk" and "Lraghir", regarding violations and falsifications at electoral districts of Yerevan constituency No 8.

Special Investigating Service conducts preliminary investigation.

Sources at the Special Investigating Service also report that Armine Avetian, journalist of the "168 zham" newspaper, and Sona Aivazian, representative of "Transparency International" who conducted an observation mission, both of whom, according to the publications of a number of media outlets, were beaten in the course of election to the Yerevan Elders' Quorum have refused to come to the Special Investigating Service for giving their testimony, reports the IA "Novosti-Armenia".
