Georgian MPs pass amnesty of drug addicts

On November 20, the Georgian parliament unanimously (86 votes) adopted, at its plenary session, the Law "On Amnesty", which assumes to halve the punishment for the people imprisoned for drug using. The current legislation provides up to 10 years of imprisonment for drug using.

In particular, the amnesty will cover the inmates serving their under article "Illegal production, purchase and storage of small amounts of drugs, analogues or precursors, or use without doctor's prescriptions", as reported by the "News Georgia".

The new law will also concern those addicts who are under legal prosecution, but the verdict has not yet announced, or the crime was committed before October 15, 2009, the "Georgia Today" writes.

  • Court denies compensation to KBR convict for HIV infection

    The Oktiabrsky District Court of Novorossiysk has dismissed Yuri Mikhailov's lawsuit for compensation for the fact that after staying in jails in Novorossiysk and in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), he was infected with HIV and hepatitis.
