Kabardino-Balkaria has about 90 long-livers

Under the outcomes of the 2010 all-Russian census, about 90 long-livers (aged 100 and more) live in Kabardino-Balkaria, said Larissa Chelysheva, head of the census division of the "Kabbalkstat" (Department for Statistics of Kabardino-Balkaria).

The long-livers were registered mainly in rural areas: 19 of them live in the Chegem, 11 - in the Zolskiy, 16 - in the Terek and 17 - in the Cherek Districts.

According to Ms Chelysheva, the preliminary results of the census showed that the population of Kabardino-Balkaria makes 859,802 persons, which is by 4.6 percent or by 41,692 persons less than it was under the 2002 census.

She also noted that in the period between censuses the republic experienced a natural growth of the population, that is, more births than deaths, and attributed the decrease of the population to migration of residents to central Russia and to the fact that during the 2002 census there were plenty of refugees from Chechnya in Kabardino-Balkaria, who have now returned to their permanent residences.

The share of the urban population made 54.5 percent (against 56.6 percent in 2002). Kabardino-Balkaria has 402,073 men (46.8 percent) and 457,729 (53.2 percent) women. The men/women ratio remained the same.

  • Lawyers doubt prospect of bills banning religious clothes

The bills that intend to ban wearing religious clothing, including niqabs, in public places are causing a split in the society, which is especially negative amid the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine. Religious clothes are not widespread in the country, this issue is not relevant, therefore the bills to ban them will not be adopted, lawyers believe.
