A flash-mob devoted to reading books passed off in Nagorno-Karabakh

About 15 young people gathered in Vozrozhdenya (Renaissance) square of Stepanakert, capital of Nagorno-Karabakh. Sitting right on the ground each of them read aloud a page from their favourite books. The flash-mob took place on April, 3.

"The goal of the action was to stimulate reading non-electronic books. Besides, the participants in this way greeted the fact that Yerevan was declared the World Book Capital of 2012", Aik Khanumyan, one of the organizers of the action, leader of a non-governmental organization "European Artsakh Movement", said.

A policeman who was on duty in Vozrozhdenya square of Stepanakert remarked that the young people were "baying the moon". "They had better slept on Sunday morning instead of violating public order", the policeman said.

When asked in what way the participants of the flash-mob were violating public order he replied: "The only fact that they are sitting on the pavement, in front of the President's office, can already be considered a violation".

"Nowadays when there is the internet one seldom pays attention to a book. My children read nothing at all beside their school text-books, they are online all the time", one of the passers-by said and added: "The book is already not that popular as it was in my younger years". He thinks that next time the young people should organize a more topical action. "For instance, they might demand to increase their scholarship or open a disc library. They can also discuss some political problems", the passerby shared his opinion.

It should be mentioned that the action had been organized by means of posting information in social networks.

  • Lawyers doubt prospect of bills banning religious clothes

The bills that intend to ban wearing religious clothing, including niqabs, in public places are causing a split in the society, which is especially negative amid the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine. Religious clothes are not widespread in the country, this issue is not relevant, therefore the bills to ban them will not be adopted, lawyers believe.
