Academician Eldar Salaev not permitted to leave Azerbaijan

A negative response has been received to the application of academician Eldar Salaev addressed to the Azeri prosecutor's office requesting permission to go abroad for medical treatment.

This has been reported to the "Azeri-press" by Fikret Khasaioglu, academician's lawyer.

According to the lawyer, the response of the prosecutor states that his trip for medical treatment abroad is not reasonable at the moment since the investigation continues.

"We have already addressed President Ilham Aliev. E. Salaev's eye-sight deteriorates with every coming day, the chance that he may go blind is high. An operation is much needed. It may only be carried out in the USA," states the Salaev's lawyer.

For reference, the academician was arrested last October on the suspicion of preparing a coup d'etat. Due to the deterioration of his state of health his arrest as a measure of restraint was replaced by home arrest.

For reference, the authorities of Azerbaijan have accused him of receiving more than 300,000 dollars from various state functionaries for passing the money to the opposition in order to organize disorder and capture the power in the country.

Eldar Salaev, ex-President of the Azeri Academy of Sciences, was released from custody on the evening of November 16.

Nasiminsk district court cancelled his arrest as a measure of restraint. Elman Salaev, academician's son, informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the measure of restraint with regard to Eldar Salaev was changed largely thanks to the address of world famous scholars to Azeri President Ilham Aliev. However, according to him, the academician is going to stay under the police surveillance and if he wants to leave the country he will need a police permit.
