Georgian MIA reports completion of the main phase of special operation in Lopota Gorge

As reported today at a briefing in the city of Telavi by Shota Khizanishvili, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, the main phase of the operation in Lopota Gorge in the Kakheti Region of Georgia is over.

Let us remind you that earlier the MIA announced detection of an armed grouping, which had supposedly penetrated to the territory of Georgia from Dagestan. On August 28, in the course of the special operation, five young people were liberated; at night on August 29, another group of hostages was freed. In the afternoon on August 29, the MIA announced the release of the third group of civilians who had been taken hostage. The special operation resulted in death of three special agents of the Georgian MIA, five more agents were wounded. Eleven suspected militants were liquidated.

"We can state that the chasing operation is almost over," said Deputy Minister. "The public safety is ensured; there is no more threat to local residents."

According to his story, the bodies of 11 dead militants were found; they will be buried according to the traditions of their faith.

The Deputy Minister has noted that some of the killed militants are citizens of the Russian Federation and natives of Northern Caucasus, the "Georgia Online" reports.

The information about the termination of the main phase of the special operation was confirmed by the Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili. "The operation is essentially over. We managed to defend the state border and safety of our citizens," the "News-Georgia" quotes him as saying.
