Georgian Parliament plans to set up interim inquiry commission

The ruling coalition "Georgian Dream" put forward an initiative to establish the temporary investigatory commission of the Parliament.

"The people of Georgia have elected us to get the answers to those questions and find out the truth. We believe that the Prosecutor's Office conducts ill investigation into the death of Zhvaniya. I do not believe the official version, and I think that Zhvaniya was murdered. The society has suspicions, and it should and has the right to get an answer," said Irina Imerlishvili, a representative of the "Georgian Dream", Chair of the parliamentary committee on rules of procedure.

According to Irina Imerlishvili, conclusions of the commissions on resonant cases will first be sent to the Prosecutor's Office and then to the court.

In its counter draft law, the oppositional "United National Movement" Party offered to appoint an oppositionist the chairman of the commission. However, Irina Imerlishvili stated that the proposal was "unacceptable".

David Bakradze, the leader of the parliamentary minority, one of the leaders of the "United National Movement" Party, accused the coalition "Georgian Dream" of failure to fulfil the promises, made during the pre-election campaign. One of the points of the pre-election programme was an issue of establishment of the temporary investigatory commission, headed by the opposition.

In his turn, Nukri Kantariya, MP from the coalition "Georgian Dream", has noted that in the prepared draft law, the "United National Movement" Party will examine crimes, committed during its ruling and that can cause internal conflict during the investigation.

David Berdzenishvili, MP from the Republican Party, a part of the coalition "Georgian Dream", has noted that "the commission will investigate the crimes, committed by top-ranking officials in the period of 2004-2012 years."
