Georgia: Ministry of Corrections asks Mikhail Saakashvili to release 137 seriously ill prisoners

Sozar Subari, Georgian Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance, appealed to the President and members of the Georgian Pardon Commission to release from prisons 137 seriously ill prisoners.

At the briefing, held on November 20, Sozar Subari has stated that 137 seriously ill prisoners, kept in the penal colonies, are in real danger.

"To leave those people in prisons means to create a serious threat to their lives, since they are seriously ill. They are in serious condition, so their release creates no danger to the society," the "Georgia Online" quotes Sozar Subari as saying.

According to the Minister, in the nearest time, new Georgian authorities will release under amnesty more than 6500 prisoners. On the first day after the approval by the Parliament of the Law on amnesty, 2000 prisoners will be released, the "RBC" reports.

In her turn, Manana Mandjgaladze, Press Speaker of the President, has stated that Mikhail Saakashvili is ready to consider the proposal of Sozar Subari to release 137 seriously ill prisoners.

Mikhail Saakashvili is ready to issue an appropriate act of pardon right upon the submission of the official request, the agency "News-Georgia" reports.
