In Georgia, former head of MIA's General Inspection detained again

Tengiz Gunava, the former head of the General Inspection of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia, detained on suspicion of embezzling 3000 litres of gasoline.

The "Caucasian Knot" reported that on November 16, Tengiz Gunava was detained at the entrance hall of his apartment building. The criminal case was instituted against him under two Articles of the Criminal Code of Georgia "Illegal purchase, possession and carrying of weapons" (236) and "Illegal drug use" (260). The defence of the defendant stated that weapon and drugs had been planted to Tengiz Gunava. On November 18, Tengiz Gunava was released on bail.

On November 29, after questioning at the Prosecutor's Office, Tengiz Gunava was detained on suspicion of embezzling gasoline.

Tengiz Gunava is suspected of embezzling 3000 litres of gasoline, and he is required to report on the expenditure of fuel. Besides, the Prosecutor's Office suspects him of abuse of power, the "Georgia Online" reports with reference to Malkhaz Velidzjanashvili, the lawyer of Tengiz Gunava.

According to the lawyer, the charges of misappropriation of gasoline is "far-fetched", since Tengiz Gunava, who occupied a high position at the MIA, had to travel a lot on business trips in the police service car.

It is expected that the charges will be filed on November 30, the "Interfax" reports.

Representatives of the "United National Movement" Party believe that the authorities prosecute Tengiz Gunava, like other members of the former government, for political reasons, and since they failed to accuse him of involvement in drug addiction or drug trafficking, they decided to invent new charges.

Commenting on the second detention of Tengiz Gunava, Akaky Minashvili, MP from the "United National Movement" Party, stated the situation proves political persecution, the "Ekho Kavkaza" (Echo of the Caucasus) reports.
