251 convicts pardoned in Georgia

President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili pardoned 251 convicts, Chairperson of the Committee for clemency with the President Elena Tevdoradze told the journalists today.

According to Tevdoradze, there are 12 women among those pardoned. Custody term for two of them was reduced twice and 10 more persons were released.

The persons pardoned will be released already today, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent reports.

Head of the Committee emphasized that requests from about 500 convicts were considered. Those of them who had served half of the term and had certificates of good conduct from the prison administration received recommendations for clemency.

“We certainly gave no recommendations to the convicts who were serving penalty for murder, rape, drug traffic, robbery and other grave crimes”, Tevdoradze said.
