Program “Resettlement of compatriots” held up in Armenia

Migration Service of Russia in Armenia stopped receiving applications from the citizens who wished to move to Russia for permanent residence within the framework of the program “Resettlement of compatriots”. The decision to stop receiving applications will remain in force till January, 10, 2013.

The program of aid to voluntary resettlement to the Russian Federation was enacted by a decree of the President in 2006 and its implementation in Armenia started since 2007.

Gagik Yeganyan, Chairman of Migration Service with the Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia, declared that the Russian migration program caused an undesirable emigrational stream from Armenia.

According to Migration Service of Russia in Armenia, 26 thousand Armenian citizens submitted applications for participation in the program, 2456 of them have already left.

“Demographic problem is critical in Armenia and the orderly outflow of population, especially from frontier zones, strikes at the national interests of Armenia”, Prime Minister of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan said.

Meanwhile, Viacheslav Kovalenko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia in Armenia, pointed out that “nobody forces the Armenians to move to Russia and there must be another reason for their migration”.
