Court in Baku leaves ReAl leader Mamedov in custody
The Nasimi District Court of Baku has dismissed the petition asking to change the freedom restriction measure of Ilgar Mamedov, the head of the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl) for home arrest.
On January 23-24, the city of Ismayilli in Azerbaijan saw street disorders that grew into clashes with the police. On February 4, Ilgar Mamedov and Tofig Yagublu, the deputy head of the "Musavat" Party, were accused of organizing disorders in Ismayilli. By decision of the Nasimi District Court, they were arrested for two months.
The defence believes that Mamedov's rights to personal freedom and the presumption of innocence were violated, as well as his right to effective legal protection, as guaranteed under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
A complaint has been already directed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) against Mamedov's illegal arrest in connection with the disorders in Ismayilli, said the lawyer Djavad Djavadly.
