Activists commemorate Anna Politkovskaya

On the 18th anniversary of the murder of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya, activists laid flowers at her home and grave in Moscow, as well as to monuments to repression victims in a number of Russian cities.

Anna Politkovskaya, known for her articles on the war and human rights violations in Chechnya, was assassinated in Moscow on October 7, 2006. In 2022, human rights defenders stated that those who ordered the murder had never been named. The court found that Lom-Ali Gaitukaev had organized the murder; he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Rustam Makhmudov was recognized as the immediate perpetrator.

Today, events in memory of Politkovskaya were held in various cities of Russia.

Residents of Vladivostok laid flowers and her portrait at the monument to the victims of political repressions.

In Moscow, activists laid flowers at the memorials in memory of Politkovskaya in Lesnaya Street and at the "Novaya Gazeta" building, as well as at her grave in the Troekurovskoye Cemetery.

"It is important for me to honour the memory of such a bright and heroic person ... I believe that she did a lot for our country, and in the end, she even gave her life," the "RusNews" outlet has quoted a young man who came to the journalist's grave as saying.

In Saint Petersburg, Boris Vishnevsky*, a deputy chairman of the "Yabloko" Party, has placed Anna's portrait at the Solovetsky Stone and laid flowers there.

"The customer of her murder has never been found or punished, although, according to my colleagues at the "Novaya Gazeta", investigators have all the necessary data. And Anna's killer was pardoned by Russian President last year for taking part in the special military operation (SMO)," Boris Vishnevsky* wrote on his Telegram channel.

Let us remind you that in 2023, Sergey Khadjikurbanov, a former law enforcer who was sentenced to 20 years in a penal colony in 2014 for his involvement in Politkovskaya's murder, was released early after taking part in the SMO in Ukraine. Anna's children and colleagues said that Khadjikurbanov's pardon was an outrage on Politkovskaya's memory.
