Georgian parliament forbids president to individually form government

In the third and final reading the Georgian parliament has adopted the amendment to the Constitution that restricts the president's powers. Under this amendment, the president will not be able to form the government without the consent of the parliament.

Today, at a special session of the parliament, the amendment was supported by 114 MPs.

According to the amendment, should the parliament three times disapprove the new government, the earlier dismissed government shall return to work in the same format.

The amendment will take effect from the date of its publication in the "Legislative Gazette". It is a temporary measure and will expire with the transition to the new wording of the Constitution in the autumn of 2013 – after inauguration of the new president of Georgia.
