In Azerbaijan, oppositionist Gasymov arrested on charges of disobeying police

Veisyal Gasymov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was arrested for disobeying the police, said Abulfaz Gurbanly, the head of the youth committee of the PFPA. The Party treats Gasymov's administrative arrest as unjustified, and intends to file a complaint against the decision of the court.

On April 2, Gasymov was put in custody for 10 days. The press service of PFPA told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the activist's detention and administrative arrest had to do with his intention to take part in a rally in Nardaran on April 1 with a demand to release theologian Talekh Bagirzade from custody.

According to Abulfaz Gurbanly, Gasymov did not conflict with the police at the rally in Nardaran; however, he often participated in protest actions and, perhaps, was known to policemen.

"We received full details about the arrest only in the evening on April 2. We are currently looking for an advocate to protect his rights and lodge an appeal," Mr Gurbanly has added.

The Sabunchi District Police refused to comment on the arrest of the oppositional activists.
