Ecologists of Volgograd ask to intensify state control of the quality of children’s goods
Within the framework of international project “Toxic metals in children’s goods” ecologists of Volgograd studied children’s toys and costume jewellery on sale in trading networks of the city. High content of toxic metals was discovered in every third sample of toys.
The project “Toxic metals in children’s goods” started in September of 2012. Ecologists from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Belorussia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan took part in it. They bought toys and other children’s goods and analyzed the content of salts of heavy metals in them, i.e. lead, mercury, stibium and arsenic.
Olga Speranskaya, Head of chemical security Program “Eco-Consent”, Co-chairperson of IPEN, informed the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent about the results of children’s toy’s tests in the member-countries.
“164 samples out of 569, i.e. almost 30 per cent, contain at least one toxic metal out of the six identifiable”, Olga Speranskaya shared her concern.
Over 80% out of the total amount of tested toys and children’s costume jewellery were made in China. It emerged that most of the Chinese goods contained no toxic metals. Every fifth toy containing toxic metals was bought in Russia.
