Series of pickets in support of Alexei Navalny held in Astrakhan

A series of pickets in support of the oppositional leader Alexei Navalny, who is accused of a large-scale embezzlement, was held today in Astrakhan.

The pickets were initiated by the regional branch of the "People's Alliance" Party and supported by civil activists and the movement "Civil Federation".

Protesters held posters "Case against Navalny is case against us!"

"Our actions are for informational purposes and held within the all-Russian campaign in support of Alexei Navalny, whose trial will start on April 17 in Kirov. We believe that the trial has a vivid political motivation and want a lot of people to know about it," Marina Zakharkina, the head of the regional branch of the "People's Alliance", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Alexei Navalny, well-known for his fight against corruption in state procurements, is charged with a large-scale embezzlement of the property of the state enterprise "Kirovles"; he may face up to ten years in prison.

"Astrakhan can not stand aside and not to express its support for Alexei," said a civic activist Mikhail Anisenko.
