Mother of resident of South Ossetia, convicted in Georgia, goes on hunger strike

In Tskhinvali, Lyudmila Usovich, a local resident, went on a hunger strike. She is the mother of Georgy Zasseev, a citizen of South Ossetia, who is serving his life sentence in Gldani Prison No. 8 in Georgia.

Lyudmila Usovich refuses to eat from April 15; and drink only water, Lira Tskhovrebova, the leader of the "Association of South-Ossetian Women for Democracy and Human Rights", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to Tskhovrebova, Usovich was forced to take this step as a sign of solidarity with her son, who, along with other citizens of South Ossetia, serving their life sentences, went on hunger strike in Gldani Prison No. 8.

According to the mother of Georgy Zasseev, "by this hunger strike guys are trying to draw attention to their situation and demand to review their criminal cases."

"Of course, I can't look calmly at my son's and our other citizens' sufferings. How can I continue living with that burden on my heart, when my son is in such a dire situation out of despair&" asked Ms Usovich.
