Georgia: supporters of "United National Movement" oppose arrest of Director General of "Rustavi-2"

About a thousand supporters of the party "United National Movement" have held a protest in Tbilisi against the arrests of Nicka Gvaramiya, Director General of "Rustavi-2", as well as the former Energy Minister Alexander Khetaguri, Director General of the Energy Company "Telasi" Devi Kandelaki and former Deputy Minister of Economy Kakha Dameniya.

On December 19, Gvaramiya, Khetaguri, Dameniya and Kandelaki were arrested on charges that that in 2005 they organized the company named "Eleni-Service", through which the "Inter RAO UES" managed to escape from paying taxes in the amount of a million US dollars when buying the company "Telasi" and the power plants "Khrami-1" and "Khrami-2".

Upon learning about the arrests of former ministers and company bosses, the MPs from the party "United National Movement" announced that the arrests were politically motivated. The party MPs stated that they would cease to participate in the work of the parliament, and arrived in Tbilisi to take part in the protest actions of their supporters.

The protesters were particularly angered by the fact that Nicka Gvaramiya, the current Director General of the "Rustavi-2" TV Company, was arrested; therefore, the rally voiced out the slogan "Stop pressing mass media!"
