Georgian President vetoes part of Law "On Amnesty"
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has vetoed a part of the Law "On Amnesty". The ruling coalition "Georgian Dream" has claimed that they have sufficient resources to overcome the veto.
On December 27, at his meeting with students, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili stated that the presidential administration received for signing the Law "On Amnesty" adopted by the Parliament; however, he would veto the part of the Law, affecting the persons sentenced for espionage, attempt of coup d'etat, and paedophilia.
The President has emphasized that the mass amnesty is the political decision of the Parliament, and he would not oppose it; however, he considers it "totally unacceptable." Speaking of that, Mikhail Saakashvili referred to the information of Irakli Garibashvili, Minister of Internal Affairs, about the growth of the number of crimes in Georgia.
"When such a large number of prisoners are released, it is dangerous. The amnesty takes place when the situation in the country is stable and the authorities can slowly empty prisons. It is very scary when most of the dangerous criminals are released," the Georgian President believes.
