Georgia sets up new group to monitor prisons

The Ministry of Corrections of Georgia is forming a new group for monitoring the jails. The work will be over by the end of January.

The powers of the previous group formed at the time when Georgy Tugushi was the Minister of Correctionswere stopped on January 1; and now the Ministry waits for recommendations on forming a group from activists of the nongovernmental sector.

The recommendations should arrive by January 14; then, the group will be formed until the end of the month, the "Medianews" reports.

The criteria for candidates to the monitoring group, established by the Ministry of Corrections, include the experience of a lawyer, doctor, psychologist or social worker for at least five years, or the experience of working for human rights organizations for at least three years.
