Lawyer Sapiyat Magomedova in Dagestan demands investigation into her being beaten up

On June, 14, layer Sapiyat Magomedova in Dagestan appealed to the court against the actions of investigative bodies who discontinued the criminal case on the fact of her being beaten up in Khasavyurt Department of Interior Affairs. The lawyer states that she was beaten by two policemen and there is enough evidence in the case for bringing a charge against them.

The incident took place on June 17, 2010, in the office of Department of Interior Affairs in Khasavyurt. The policemen beat her up and practically threw her out of the building of the Department where she came to protect her client’s interests.

A criminal case against the police officers was initiated according to clause “Abuse of authority” but then it was discontinued for the absence of components of crime in the defendants’ actions.

Sapiyat Magomedova disagrees with the investigation’s conclusions. She considers that the investigation did not receive a comprehensive and reasonable result of forensic medical examination of her bodily injuries and carried out no efficient inquiry.

She submitted a claim to eliminate the violations committed by the investigation to Sovetsky district court of Makhachkala.

The incident with Sapiyat Magomedova in Khasavyurt Department of Interior Affairs has evoked widespread responses in the republic and outside it and has attracted the attention of human rights centers who called for unbiased investigation into the matter.
