Georgia: "Alliance of Patriots" seeks early parliamentary elections

The "Alliance of Patriots" has addressed the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia with an application for a referendum on early parliamentary elections, said Joseph Manjavidze, one of the leaders of the organization.

Its members believe that the political forces represented in the parliament of the current convocation fail to reflect the political reality; while the new elections will radically change the balance of forces.

"With the current political situation in the pre-election period, the pro-presidential party 'United National Movement' would never win 40 percent of the vote. Besides, such parties are represented in the parliament, which would not win even one percent of the vote. The current percentage is the result of a political conspiracy," Joseph Manjavidze told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his opinion, the current parliament fails to represent the views and needs of the population; and its four-year-long mandate "will lead to serious consequences."

Under the legislation, the CEC must register the initiative group, which should present – on special forms and within a three-month period – at least 200,000 signatures of supporters of the referendum.

The "Alliance of Patriots" is ready to collect the required number of signatures, the "Echo of the Caucasus" reported on June 12 with reference to the organization's spokesman.
