Deadline for Azerbaijani authorities to answer ECtHR's request on Mamedov's case is over

Tuesday was the deadline appointed by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) for the government of Azerbaijan to answer the request of the Court on the case of Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl). His advocate Fuad Agaev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he had not been informed on whether the answer was dispatched.

According to Agaev, Mamedov's defence will know the contents of the government's response, when the ECtHR will send them the document for comments. When asked about the time needed for the Court to make a decision on the complaint, Agaev said that there is no specific time frame. "I think that this will happen within the next few months, and possibly before the presidential election, scheduled for the second half of October," says the lawyer.

He added that should the complaint be satisfied and the violation of Mamedov's rights recognized, the Azerbaijani courts will have to reverse his arrest, and the government will have to pay the prescribed compensation. Such decision will also tell positively on the outcome of the consideration of the charges on the merits, the defence believes.

Let us remind you that Mamedov is accused of organizing mass riots in the city of Ismailly on January 23-24.

On June 13, the European Parliament adopted a resolution, which condemned Mamedov's arrest and called on the authorities of Azerbaijan to ensure "a prompt, fair, transparent and independent investigation into the charges against him."
