Azerbaijan: at trial of PFPA activist, judge grants defence's motion

Today, the Sumgait City Court has begun the hearing on the merits of the criminal case of Dashgyn Melikov, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA). The judge has satisfied the motion of the defence to summon additional witnesses from among policemen.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the 22-year-old Melikov was detained on March 25 inSumgait on suspicion of making counterfeit money. Two fake currency banknotes of 100 manats (about 127 US dollars) were found on him.

The lawyer Asabali Mustafaev has lodged a motion to bring the two policemen who came home to the Melikovs on March 19 and 21, to the case as additional witnesses.

"These policemen came home to Dashgyn Melikov. They asked about his political activities, took a copy of his party certificate. All this confirms the political nature of the case against Dashgyn Melikov", Mustafaev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

The lawyer also told about poor health condition of his client, who suffers from bronchial asthma.

The judge has ultimately granted the lawyer's motion and scheduled the next session for 4:00 p.m. on June 21.
