Journalists and representatives of NGOs in Georgia argue on whether video records of tortures to detainees should be made public
Video records of tortures to detainees in the Ministry of Interior Affairs of Georgia found on June, 17, in hiding places of Samegrelo (Western Georgia) were shown on June, 20, at a press-show for journalists and representatives of NGOs. The experts disagreed on whether such scenes should be shown to the public at large.
The press-show was carried out by Minister of Interior Affairs of Georgia Irakly Garibashvili, the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent reports.
One could see on the video several men tie up a detainee and use electric shock. According to the subtitles, after that the man said: “I confess to everything”. Then followed scenes of rape of the detainee tied up with Scotch tape. According to Garibashvili, the detainee who underwent rape was targeted in the investigation on the case of terrorist acts committed in 2010 in the territory of Georgia.
A show of these records may cause a burst of public aggression, representative of NGO “Human Rights Center” Aleko Tshkvitishivili told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.
Persons who committed such crimes must be punished regardless of their political affiliation and the case must be investigated perfectly, Leader of “United National Movement”, ex-Speaker of the Parliament David Bakradze considers.
Earlier, June, 17, after detection of the hiding places was reported, one of the leaders of “United National Movement” Georgy Vashadze declared that he doubted about reliability of the information from the Ministry of Interior Affairs.
