Supreme Court of Dagestan upholds amendments that cancel direct election of republic's head
The Supreme Court of Dagestan has dismissed the claim of the lawyer Rasul Kadiev, who challenged the amendments to the Constitution of Dagestan the Republic, which have abolished the direct election of the head of the republic. A motivated judgment will be ready within five days, after which Kadiev may decide to appeal.
Let us remind you that on April 18 the Deputies of the People's Assembly of Dagestan made amendments to the Constitution, under which the republic's head will be henceforth elected by the parliamentarians, not by direct popular vote, as before. On June 6, Kadiev filed a suit to the Supreme Court demanding to invalidate the amendments, because they had been adopted "with clear and flagrant violations of the procedure and the rigging of the text" and unduly restricted his right as a citizen of the Republic of Dagestan to elect the top executive official of his republic – the President of Dagestan.
The court session lasted for about two and a half hours. Judge Khanmagomed Shikhgereev finally ruled to dismiss Kadiev's motion. A motivated decision will be ready within five days.
Rasul Kadiev intends to wait for it and further decide whether he will appeal against it to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, the lawyer himself told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
Earlier it was reported that the Lenin District Court of Makhachkala has rejected the claim lodged by Rasul Kadiev in demand of compensation for his moral harm caused by the abolition of direct elections.
