After the rally against nickel extraction near Khopyor River rigs set on fire
After the rally in Novokhopyorsk, unidentified persons set fire to the nickel extraction rigs; and several participants of the rally were detained, Leonid Makhinya, an activist of "The Other Russia", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
As reported earlier, last Saturday, in the Novokhopyorsk District of the Voronezh Region that borders on the Volgograd Region, over 4500 people rallied against extraction of nickel. The rally was attended by activists of public movements and political parties of the Volgograd Region.
"After the rally, the crowd moved to the fenced area of the nickel company; the fence was torn down; and the unidentified persons set fire to the drilling rigs; a fire broke out; and people did not let fire-fighting vehicles to the emergency," Leonid Makhinya has added.
According to his story, three Uryupinsk residents were detained; policemen suffered in the clash.
So far, there is no official confirmation of this information.
Let us remind you that on May 22, 2012, it was announced that the right to develop the deposit was awarded to the Mednogorsk Copper and Sulphur Combine, a part of the LLC "UMMC-Holding". This led to mass protests of residents of the Volgograd and Voronezh Regions.
