PACE spoke for the presence of Monitoring mission of EU in the zone of the conflict of August, 2008

Upon the results of a discussion in Strasbourg PACE adopted a resolution today in which it spoke for the presence of Monitoring mission of EU in the zone of the conflict between Russia and Georgia that took place in August of 2008.

In her report deputy from Sweden Tina Akertoft spoke about the problem of providing with dwelling “a lot of refugees who are ethnic Ossetians, first of all, those who became refugees as a result of the conflicts in Georgia in the beginning of the 90-s as well as the conflict of 2008”.

The reporter spoke for creation of an “international peacemaking mechanism in order to put an end to the extremely unstable situation of confrontation of the armed forces in the conflict zones”. In her opinion, it is necessary to involve the Monitoring mission of the European Union in solving the problems of security in the region”, “Novosti-Georgia” reports.

After discussion of the report a resolution was adopted emphasizing the necessity to “start an actual dialogue on the question of monitoring on both sides of the administrative border with the participation of EU Monitoring mission”.

It is also pointed out in the resolution that a “large-scale Russian military presence in Abkhazia and South Ossetia creates an ambiguous impression”, RIA “Novosti” reports.

The delegation of the Russian Federation did not support the resolution. “There is a great distortion in the report with a stress on the problem of Georgian refugees while no attention is paid to those injured in South Ossetia. It is a striking example of double standards”, ITAR-TASS quotes Deputy Head of the delegation Leonid Slutsky.
