Injured Airikyan to initiate postponement of presidential election in Armenia

Today, Paruir Airikyan, a presidential candidate in Armenia and the Chairman of the Association "National Self-Determination" has announced his intention to address Constitutional Court to postpone the presidential election by 15 days, since after the attack on him he will need time for a full recovery.

On January 31, at 11:30 p.m. Paruir Airikyan was attacked and taken to the St Gregor Lusavorich Medical Centre with a gunshot wound, where he was successfully operated on.

According to his attending physician, Airikyan's life is out of danger, but he lost a lot of blood. "Airikyan should stay in hospital under the supervision of doctors for 7-10 days," said the doctor on air of the Public Television of Armenia.

Today, Paruir Airikyan told reporters that he feels good and is on the mend; however, he intends to apply to the Constitutional Court of Armenia asking to postpone by 15 days the presidential election scheduled for February 18. He did not specify the date of his visit to the Constitutional Court.

The consideration of election postponement is only possible if the attempted candidate will lodge a respective application, as the RIA "Novosti" quotes Gagik Arutyunyan, Chairman of the Constitutional Court, as saying.
