Action demanding housing for needy families held in Georgia

On January 31 in Tbilisi, the students' movement "Laboratory 1918" held an action "Housing to all!" Currently, about 40 families live in the former school No. 68; they have no other shelter.

Socially needy families are allowed living in former schools and kindergartens.

"I came here to express my solidarity. We demand that these people are given some alternative accommodation. The state must take care of these people. Apart from this school, up to 100 families live in the former military settlement in Tamarashvili Street," said Tornike Asabashvili, an architect and an activist of the "Laboratory 1918".

Later, the crowd moved to the Ministry of Economy, where the protesters were complemented by socially vulnerable families from the nearby city of Rustavi.

Nana Giorgadze, a 57-year-old widow, said that in Rustavi they live in a former higher school together with 57 other families.

The action continued in front of the Mayoralty, where protesters managed to meet its representative Mamuka Katsarava, who stated that they could not help at the moment. This did not satisfy the protesters; and Sandro Tsagareli, one of them, said that protests will continue.
