Arrested leader of "ReAl" Ilgar Mamedov nominated as presidential candidate

Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl), arrested on charges of organizing riots in the city of Ismailly, has been nominated by the movement as a presidential candidate at the election of the head of Azerbaijan upcoming on October 16, 2013.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 4 Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the oppositional movement "ReAl", and Tofig Yagublu, a deputy chairman of the "Musavat" Party, saw official charges of organizing unrests in Ismailly; and the court ruled to arrest them for two months.

On February 5, Natig Djafarli, a board member and the executive secretary of the "ReAl", said that the nomination of the candidate from the movement was to be discussed on February 9. "In the context of the arrest of Ilgar Mamedov, we decided to take a decision on this issue today," said Djafarli.

He added that the movement will campaign for release of Mamedov and at the same time – for him as a presidential candidate.
