Participants of rally in front of Armenia's GPO demand release of convicted ANC activists

On June 28, 40 persons took part in a protest action held in front of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) of Armenia demanding immediate release and acquittal of the four young activists of the oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC), now kept in custody.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 20, 2012, the court sentenced the ANC activists Tigran Arakelyan, Artak Karapetyan, David Kiramidjyan and Sarkis Gevorkyan to different terms of imprisonment.

Their prosecution was caused by the incident that occurred on August 9, 2011, between the ANC activists and policemen in Yerevan. The police spokesman stated that the ANC activists had committed acts of hooliganism and resisted to the police. The ANC claims that the incident was provoked by the policemen.

The protesters gathered in front of the GPO, chanting "Free Armenia!" Many of them held posters: "Armenia without political prisoners!", "Acquit young ANC activists!" and "Put end to injustice!" The police did not interfere into the course of the action, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
