Mikhail Saakashvili declared his readiness to discuss amendments to the Constitution of Georgia

Today President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili commented on the ultimatum declared by Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili who demanded an unambiguous response to the initiative of the parliamentary majority of introducing amendments to the Constitution. According to Saakashvili, he is ready to discuss the amendments.

Yesterday, February, 26, Bidzina Ivanishvili submitted a written statement to Mikhail Saakashvili demanding to express himself on the amendments initiated by the “Georgian Dream”.

In December of 2012 the ruling coalition introduced two amendments to the Constitution: moving the Parliament from Kutaisi to Tbilisi and prohibition to the President of Georgia to form the Government without the Parliament’s consent. On January, 26, “United National Movement” headed by Saakashvili refused to participate in public hearings on consideration of the project of amendments to the Constitution of Georgia.

“The word “ultimatum” is used in Prime Minister’s message. The ultimatum is first of all offensive for the Government elected by the citizens, not the person it is addressed to”, President Saakashvili declared.

It should be reminded that 100 votes of the deputies are necessary to introduce amendments to the Constitution of Georgia. The “Georgian Dream” coalition has 83 deputies in the Parliament of the present convocation.
