An action in protection of “Zhokhovurd” newspaper held in Yerevan

On January, 30, a number of journalists, political figures and civil activists took part in an action in protection of “Zhokhovurd” (“People”) newspaper in Yerevan. They demanded to release the property of the newspaper and correspondent Sona Grigoryan.

The participants chanted “Justice!” holding posters “We will not let a seller of expired eggs dominate the court!”

Earlier, President of “X-Group” company Khachik Khachatryan, owner of Yerevan battery farm, appealed to court demanding negation of the newspapers’ article running that the battery farm sold expired eggs at the market”. According to Khachatryan, the article gave offence to his and his company’s reputation.

The court of administrative districts of Ketron and Nork-Marash under the chairmanship of judge Ruben Apinyan decided to sequestrate the property of the newspaper and correspondent Sona Grigoryan to the sum of 3 million drams (about 7500 dollars) to provide security for the claim.

“By means of this action we strive for release of the property of the newspaper and our correspondent”, Editor of “Zhokhovurd” newspaper Taguyi Tovmasyan declared. According to her, during pre-election period certain forces are trying to hinder the newspaper’s work. Tovmasyan added that the first trial on the case was appointed on March, 22.
