NCDF of Azerbaijan nominates Rustam Ibragimbekov as presidential candidate

In Azerbaijan, on July 2, the oppositional National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) nominated its chairman, a famous screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov, as a candidate for presidency at the upcoming this October presidential election.

During the debates at the second session of the NCDF in Baku, Ibragimbekov was the only candidate. Thus, he has become the united candidate from the leading opposition parties of Azerbaijan.

The proposal to nominate Ibragimbekov was made by Eldar Namazov, the chief of staff of the NCDF, the leader of the political movement EL (People). He noted that Ibragimbekov enjoys great popularity in the Azerbaijani society and the trust of a broad spectrum of political forces. Namazov said that Ibragimbekov, who is currently abroad, had accepted the conditions set out in the memorandum on the united candidate.

Let us remind you that on June 7 the ruling party "Eni Azerbaijan" unanimously nominated the incumbent head of the state Ilham Aliev as its presidential candidate.

The upcoming presidential election is scheduled for October 16; however, as this date falls on the weekend, when the religious holiday of Kurban Bayram ('Id al-Adha) is celebrated, the election day may be rescheduled.
