Zaur Gurbanly, arrested in Azerbaijan, need surgery, says his mother

The health condition of Zaur Gurbanly, a youth activist of the public movement "Nida" (Shout) and a blogger, who is kept at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), continues deteriorating. He needs a surgery, his mother Sakina Gurbanova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Zaur Gurbanly is one of the "Nida" activists, arrested in March and April on charges of illegal possession of explosives and narcotic drugs. On June 24, the court extended his arrest by three months. On July 1, the Court of Appeal dismissed the complaint against the arrest extension.

Earlier, his advocate and relatives expressed their concern about the health of the young man, whose chronic disease worsened dramatically in jail. Gurbanly is sick with thalassemia (a hereditary haemolytic anaemia that caused a number of pathological changes due to impaired oxygen supply, – note of the "Caucasian Knot").

"We want an urgent surgery; but we want him to be examined and operated on by our trusted doctor. We asked the Penitentiary Service to admit our trusted doctor to examine him. Now, we wait for their answer," said the mother.

So far, the "Caucasian Knot" has no comments of the PR Division of the Penitentiary Service on the statements of Zaur Gurbanly's mother about his deteriorating health.
