North-Caucasian Biennale in Dagestan brought together over 1300 persons
More than 1,300 people have become participants and spectators of the international exhibition project of contemporary art "North-Caucasian Biennale-2013" held in Dagestan. The project involved 140 works in the genres of painting, graphic arts, installations and art-objects, photography and video art, created by 37 authors from Dagestan, North Ossetia, Adygea, Krasnodar, Omsk, Moscow and other cities.
The "North-Caucasian Biennale-2013", organized by the Art-Centre "First Gallery" was held in Kaspiisk from May 11 to June 30. The project is implemented with the grant of President of Dagestan in the field of culture and arts for 2012 with the support of the All-Russian Association of Arts Scientists and Arts Critics (known as AIS) and the Dagestani branch of the OJSC "RusHydro".
Besides, a series of educational meetings and lectures "SKB-Prosvet" was held, which was attended by arts critics, arts historians and artists. The organizers also arranged a display of classic video-arts (Marina Abramovich "Arts Must be Beautiful", "Freeing the Voice", "Freeing the Memory", and Shirin Neshat "Turbulence", "Possessed" and "Pulse" (Heartbeat)).
The project received a mixed assessment of the spectators and participants. However, according to the arts critic and AIS member Vlada Besarab, 1300 visitors is a great achievement for Northern Caucasus, and, in particular, for Dagestan, "since the contemporary arts are a priori expecting the attention of contemporaries, but, alas, not always get it."
