Azerbaijani CoA dismisses complaint of Mamed Azizov, "Nida" activist

Today, the Court of Appeal (CoA) has dismissed the complaint against extension of custody of Mamed Azizov, an activist of the civil movement "Nida" (Shout), accused of illegal possession of drugs. This was reported by his advocate Fariz Namazly.

The advocate has told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the defence has enough arguments in favour of the cancellation of extension of the period of detention in custody of Mamed Azizov.

"He is also not going to hide from investigators, since he do not feel guilty. Finally, he has no chances, while being free, to put pressure on witnesses. And there are no witnesses, except for law enforcers who conducted the search at the rented apartment of Mamed Azizov," the advocate has explained.

According to the story of Fariz Namazly, the preliminary investigation into the case against activist of the movement "Nida" will be delayed till December 2013, when the maximum period for detention in custody of the persons under investigation expires.

"The case against the activists of the movement 'Nida' is of political nature. On the eve of the presidential election to be held in October, the authorities will hardly begin legal proceedings against the youth activists, since the case will have a resonance and may cause new protest actions and political statements from a trial tribune. For the same reasons, the authorities will not begin the legal proceedings immediately after the election," the advocate believes.

Till present, the "Caucasian Knot" has no comments of representatives of the investigators concerning allegations of the political nature of the case against Mamed Azizov and unreasonableness of his detention in custody.
