Murad Musaev: decision to ban hijabs in schools of Stavropol Territory to be challenged at Presidium of Russian SC
The decision to ban wearing hijabs in schools of the Stavropol Territory will be challenged at the Presidium of the Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation. This was announced by advocate Murad Musaev. In his turn, Vladimir Molchanov, a representative of the respondent, has emphasized that today the Russian SC announced a fair decision and upheld the lawfulness of the resolution of the government of the Stavropol Territory.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today, the Collegium of the Russian SC has refused to grant the appeal against the decision of the Stavropol Regional Court on the lawsuit against the regional government in connection with the ban on wearing hijabs in schools.
At the court hearings, the complainants referred to the fact that the decision to ban wearing the clothing with religious attributes and symbols at educational institutions had violated the freedom of religion guaranteed by Article 28 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
However, the Stavropol Territorial Court has found the arguments of the complainants on violation of the right to freedom of religion to be unconvincing and agreed with the arguments of the government of the Stavropol Territory that wearing religious clothing contradicts the principles of the secular character of education.
Meanwhile, the Court has emphasized that the decision of the government of the Stavropol Territory is not aimed at limiting one's freedoms, but to prevent signs of difference.
"We still hope to win the case. Maybe, we will win it at the Russian Constitutional Court. Or, otherwise, we'll have to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), although we would prefer to win the case in Russia," a female complainant told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
