ECtHR begins communicating with Azerbaijani Govt on Emin Guseinov's complaint
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has started its communication with the Government of Azerbaijan on the complaint lodged by Emin Guseinov, the director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), in connection with his beating at the police station in June 2008. The government should answer the questions of the ECtHR before October, said Gyunay Ismailova, the lawyer of the IRFS.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 14, 2008, Emin Guseinov was detained along with the members of the "Che Guevara Club", as he was videoing their meetings in the Baku cafe "Alaturka". At the Police Station No. 22 he was subjected to physical violence, hospitalized in the unconscious condition and spent in the hospital for nearly three weeks.
Emin Guseinov stated in his complaint to the ECtHR that Azerbaijani authorities had violated his rights by failing to investigate his complaints against the police.
Emin Guseinov has noted that he had filed a complaint to the ECtHR not only to restore his rights.
"It is important to set a precedent of recognizing by the authorities of beating journalists by policemen, and of punishing them, so it does not happen again," Guseinov said in his interview with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
